Health Facilities in Rwanda

The health facilities in Rwanda are classified as referral hospitals, provincial hospitals, district hospitals, health centers, health posts, private dispensaries, clinics, polyclinics, prison dispensaries, and voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) centers. At the end of 2016, the number of health facilities in Rwanda, including the private facilities, was 1,311 (Ref. Tables 1).

* In 2016, the police hospital was converted into a district hospital.

In 2016, there were 8 National Referral hospitals, 4 provincial hospitals, and 36 district hospitals. The number of health centers (HCs) increased to 499 and represented 36.5% of all the facilities. The numbers of health posts represented 35.9% of all facilities. Table 2 indicates the distribution of different types of health facilities by district.  There were significant increases in the number of health posts and private clinics during the year, while one new District Hospital and 4 new health centers were opened.
